Our Visit From Diane!

This last weekend, Jason's Mom came to stay with us for a few days! It was so nice to have some family here! I think Jason and I have both decided that when it is time to settle down somewhere, the first requirement on our list will be that we have some sort of family near by!

There were a few things I have been wanting to check out since we moved here, so it was nice to have an excuse to go and do them. First we went to Bricktown, an area in downtown OKC right off the river with different shops. I had hoped for a unique atmosphere, with a lot of specialty shops, but we discovered it was more of a glorified concessions stand, with most of the shops being restaurants and bars. All in all, it was still a nice area and we enjoyed our lunch and walk along the river.

Next we went to the Oklahoma City National Memorial. I figured it would be a solemn place, but was not prepared for how much of an affect it would have on me. It's just so hard to imagine why or how someone could do something like that. I think the hardest part for me was seeing photographs of the victims, and thinking about all that their families had to go through. Even though it was hard to see it all and take it all in, I am so glad we went. The city truly did an amazing job, and it is a beautiful and peaceful place.

Sunday was a nice, relaxing day. I don't think any visit from Diane would be complete without a game of GOLF! Ever since we learned it earlier this year, it has become a staple every time we see the family. It has definitely become one of my favorite games, probably because it doesn't take much skill!

We also made a yummy, EASY ice cream cake. I saw the recipe on Kraftfoods.com and couldn't justify making it for just Jason and myself, so I figured that company was the perfect reason to make it!

Jason had school on Monday, so Diane and I went baby shopping. It was nice to have her there with me since I am clueless as to what I need and what I don't! After all the shopping our feet were tired so we went and pampered ourselves and got pedicures. It was so fun to have her here with us and we miss her tons! Thanks for everything Diane! We can't wait to see you again in October!

Catching Up!

OK, let's go way back to the 4th of July! I must admit I was pretty disappointed with the lack of patriotism there was around here! I figured the mid-west would be one of the most patriotic places to be on the 4th, boy was I wrong. I am hoping that I just didn't have enough time to research all the festivities and next year will be more exciting!

We started out the day by going to the Moore's annual Art in the Park. I had a few booths with vendors selling their homemade handicrafts and various foods and also some crafting booths for young kids. The real reason I wanted to go was because they were having a classic car show, something that has become a staple for me on the 4th thanks to my car crazy Dad! We got there just before the judging, and as they were reading off the winners, an old woman passed out due to the heat! The announcer stopped for a while as someone called an ambulance and then said, "Well, while we wait for the ambulance, let's continue". I felt SO bad for the old lady! I can't believe they didn't just wait 10 minutes to make sure she was ok! Anyway, Jay and I picked out our favorite cars. Mine was a '56 Chevy, black and white with cherry red on the inside! Jason chose a classic Corvette, although we are not sure what year it was. And yes, the old lady turned out to be alright.

After going home for a little while to cool down, we went over to the Dulgarian's family friend's house, the Petersons. They invited us and a couple from their ward who is also just starting dental school. We had a delicious bbq, and were forced inside mid-meal when it started to poor down rain. Luckily the rain didn't last long and we were able to go and watch some fireworks. Nothing too spectacular, but at least we got to see some. Here is an amazing shot I got of the grand finale! I think my new calling in life is to be a photographer, what do you think?

I think the small white spot in the photo is actually a street light!!! :)

School Begins For J-Bird

To kick off dental school for the first year students, OU held a white coat ceremony. It felt sort of like a graduation, just 4 years too early!!! It began with the students walking in, single file, up to the stage as they played an elevator version of Red Hot Chili Peppers "Under The Bridge", something everyone is still a little confused about! :) They had a few speakers talk about the symbolism of the white coat and how important it is to be a "professional". Then each of the students crossed the stage and received their first white coat, embroidered name included! I was in awe as I looked up at all the students on stage and thought about how much work they had done to get to this point. I think this is the most proud I have been of Jason, he has worked so hard for this, and I am so grateful for his dedication.

Jason just finished his second week of school. There is just one class during the summer semester, but it is pretty intense. It is a human dissection class. Jason was worried about he would handle it at first, but he has been able to take it like a champ. He comes home excited everyday with a new story of what part of the body his group got to dissect. I don't know how he does it, just the stories are enough to make me nauseous! Here is a picture of Jay on his first official day of school. They require the students to wear scrubs everyday.
